Divorce - Parenting Plan

Updated: Nov 3, 2022

[ #Mediation - #Divorce- Parenting Plan]

Divorce is never an easy thing, whether it is mutually agreed upon or conflicting. If there are children involved, it will be a little more complicated.

When Mediating Divorce cases with children, I would look closely at the parenting plans of both parents to look for gaps. There are instances where theIr plans are the same and look good, but when I did some reality testing, the scenario changes.

I have seen access or visitation where numerous conditions address possible scenarios. These conditions may provide some structure, but sometimes it is overwhelming not only for the parties but also for the children.

Reality testing helps the parties to see beyond what they see themselves. Children's behaviour changes as they grow, and very long and tight conditions may become more painful than help.

Some parties requested another round of mediation to relook at the situation based on new development or to go and check for themselves and reevaluate the impact on their lives post-divorce. Almost all come back with a more realistic plan, and alternatives should be if their first plan won't work. It is fantastic as it indicates that they are better prepared.

I urge them to evaluate their emotional self and seek counselling to help them manage their emotions during this period to make clear objective decisions.

What was your experience? I would love to hear from you.
