I have come across many litigants who shared that lawyers are expensive. I responded Counsels do charge because it's part of their work, would you go and work for free?... almost always there is a long silence.
In Singapore, there are free legal clinics where Counsels advise a limited time-frame as part of their community service. You can google them.
Alternatively, parties can go to the Community Justice Center at State Courts, which provides a wide range of services for Litigants in Person.
It's useful that if you understand your rights and obligations than at Mediation, you can formulate your BATNA and WATNA.
