Collaborative Divorce- Children

[ Collaborative Divorce - Children]

Managing children post-divorce can be challenging to parties as well as children. It can take up a lot of time, effort, and energy.

In my Mediation sessions, I ask parents about their plans for the children, and once they share their goals, I will ask them to think about what the children are going through now? Most parties realize that there is much work and begin to design their access plan collaboratively.

I remind the parents that they have to bear in mind that this plan is to give the structure. They would have to remain flexible to navigate their children slowly to this structure. I also remind them that the access plan is dynamic; it would change over time as the children grow. Hence, both parents need to be aware of this too.

I encourage them to consider giving advance notices so that the spouse with care and control can have time to organize things, such as notifying the school or daycare center well in advance to prevent any misunderstanding. A lot of parents factored this into their access plan.
